Nights Over Egypt

My good friend, John Simmons was coming over the other day and this came on... perfection!

The Jones Girls was a 70's Detroit based, R & B trio. They had a couple minor hits in the late 70's/early 80's; however, their songs saw major success when covered by others. Nights Over Egypt is definitely my fave! Thanks to John for breaking me off with the Incognito version!

Here's the original...

And lastly, a Moombahsoul edit of the original by Brendon P...

Most of you, I'm sure, are really familiar with Xscape's cover of Who Can I Run To. Did you know it was a cover?

Nantes (Fredo & Thang Disco Remix)

I posted up the original "Nantes" about six months back. Even though the track had been out for a while, I only found the "Fredo & Thang" Disco Remix about 4 months ago and included it on my "Chicago After Hours Vol. 2" mix.

This remix really holds true to the original which is what I absolutely love about it. Fredo & Thang did a great job of tastefully incorporating drums to give it a nice 4/4 dance music structure and really worked on a proper build before you hear any vocal.

New Hot Dog Release // Monkey Virus EP

Monkey Virus aka Byron Duarte is no stranger to music as a Chicago based music producer but that experience & passion shines though in his latest EP as Monkey Virus. His debut “Go” with Allusion Records marked a new chapter & his follow up in his 3-track EP with “Bombastic”, “Digiton”, & “Black Sun” with Hot Dog Records realizes that effort to bring it full circle. Monkey Virus brings a rich & complex sound throughout the EP as he creates some progressive House mixes & layers them with world rhythms.

From “Bombastic” a clear club banger, Monkey Virus only evolves from there with “Digiton” taking on Latin beats & “Black Sun” bringing the entire sonic world he has created forward. The EP continues a high set standard of not only creating complex & layered beats but also continues furthering what is already a promising career.

You can purchase the release on Beatport.

Ghost Mutt - Sweat Mode EP

I was first introduced to this Ghost Mutt from the homey Dom Brown. Needless to say Dom knows me quite well as I was blown away by the cut "Sweat Mode". With a little research I found that dude was releasing a new album which samples 4 Keith Sweat tracks tweaked in his style of UK Bass, House, and Funk. I live this trend of 90's R&B being reworked / glitched out, and brought back to the dance floor. Hope to hear more like it.

This new "Sweat Mode EP" is available for free on Bandcamp. Get at it!

New Cobra Krames H E A T

New York Club Vol 2, the 9th commercial release on Gold Whistle, is a Vegas style buffet of club music, giving the listener a taste of all things booty. Infectious horns, nu-rave stabs & club classic bed squeaks, "hey" and "whats" reverberate through the EP. Volume 2 is packed with collaborations including Raziek (Booty Call Records), DirtyFinger & Lisa Dank.

When describing the "New York Club" EP, Cobra Krames comments, "'Volume 2 lives in the club but hangs out in the trap. The tracks are crispy and diverse ready for the warehouse or the big room. We all went full force bringing everything we love about club music to the table."

Check the preview below and cop this EP on Juno.

Happy Birthday, Paul Johnson!

This week we celebrate the birth of my dear friend and legendary DJ/Producer, Paul Johnson. For most, this name needs no explaining, but for those who do, where do I begin... Paul is one of thee biggest names in the iconic Chicago House music scene of the 90s. He is the first name mentioned in Daft Punk's "Teachers" track! Ok?! Nuff said!!

To celebrate this man's life I am sharing with you my favorite mix made by him... "I Need Another Plan." Oh, the countless days my friends and I spent doing the raver hop on my best gal's porch on 79th & Maplewood blasting this!! We were a spectacle. FO SHO! *Funny Tidbit: This was released before CDs were the norm and mid mix he delivers his outro for the A side of the cassette! HAHA... Actual mix TAPE CASSETTES!! Please look him up and buy his music! Out of respect, I can't give it to you for free,

Next, I will share with you the title track of this mix, Abtract Truth's "Get Another Plan." Abstract Truth is one of the biggest house bands of the 90s. Honestly, every track on this mix is a GEM! I wish I could share them all with you!

And lastly, this is probably Abstract Truth's biggest house track. Not located on the mix, but SIMPLY ICONIC!

As my friend Paul would say,

For the lives we have lived in the past, the present, and those to come, I LOVE YOU, Paul!

Open Your Eyes To The Morning Of New Life

One of my New Year's resolutions was to get serious about this blogging thing. I've come to the conclusion that the only way this is going to happen is if I keep these as short and sweet as possible. Yes, this is how I will stay consistent! After all, you're here for music, not words, right? Wish me luck!

I'll be sharing two 4Hero tracks with you to start your New Year right. 4Hero is a production duo that consists of 2 of the original UK Junglist/Drum & Bassists. In 2007, they released a full length Neo Soul/Jazz album aptly named "Playing With The Changes."

The first of the two is Morning Child. Close your eyes, set the intention for your year, and listen to this song... "Open your eyes to the morning of new life."

And, here's a song of hope for those moments that try to break you... "I'll be your friend through the cloudy days. Don't be ashamed. I wont let you give in."

Download: 4Hero - Give In

I had the idea to post these two songs as I resurrected one of my favorite mixes of all time this weekend, Sea Panda Spring Time Love Breaks Part Two by DJ Magento. Coincidence? I think not. Ah, Manny Magneto... Not only one of my favorite DJs, but one of my favorite people in general. This all around great guy is by far one of the most seamlessly versatile DJs I know. This mix is one of his grown and sexy pieces. It'll get you nice and warm on a cold Winter's day. Fo sho!
