I posted up the original "Nantes" about six months back. Even though the track had been out for a while, I only found the "Fredo & Thang" Disco Remix about 4 months ago and included it on my "Chicago After Hours Vol. 2" mix.

This remix really holds true to the original which is what I absolutely love about it. Fredo & Thang did a great job of tastefully incorporating drums to give it a nice 4/4 dance music structure and really worked on a proper build before you hear any vocal.

I was first introduced to this Ghost Mutt from the homey Dom Brown. Needless to say Dom knows me quite well as I was blown away by the cut "Sweat Mode". With a little research I found that dude was releasing a new album which samples 4 Keith Sweat tracks tweaked in his style of UK Bass, House, and Funk. I live this trend of 90's R&B being reworked / glitched out, and brought back to the dance floor. Hope to hear more like it.

This week we celebrate the birth of my dear friend and legendary DJ/Producer, Paul Johnson. For most, this name needs no explaining, but for those who do, where do I begin... Paul is one of thee biggest names in the iconic Chicago House music scene of the 90s. He is the first name mentioned in Daft Punk's "Teachers" track! Ok?! Nuff said!!

To celebrate this man's life I am sharing with you my favorite mix made by him... "I Need Another Plan." One of my New Year's resolutions was to get serious about this blogging thing. I've come to the conclusion that the only way this is going to happen is if I keep these as short and sweet as possible. Yes, this is how I will stay consistent! After all, you're here for music, not words, right? Wish me luck!

I'll be sharing two 4Hero tracks with you to start your New Year right. 4Hero is a production duo that consists of 2 of the original UK Junglist/Drum & Bassists. In 2007, they released a full length Neo Soul/Jazz album aptly named "Playing With The Changes."

I'm sure by now you have noticed I have been cranking out the mixes as of late. For this most recent mix I decided to go against the after hours series and make a mix for music that I play at peak time in the club. The tracks I selected were tunes that I rocked the hell out of in the year of 2011, so it could almost even be consider a "best of" mix. I'm beyond excited to have this release finally come to fruition. The main track is produced by local Dj / Producer Leather Disco aka Ross Kelly who is part owner of the amazing store, Kokoroko (1112 N. Ashland Ave). He brings a slow nu-italo disco track that exudes sexiness in all kinda ways. This true italo feel is brought on by the classic hardware that Ross uses to make his tunes. While many producers this day and age are all software based, Ross keeps the analog tradition alive. Along with the original we have remixes from myself, Tim Zawada, Square Frames, Mondragon, and Rampage & Nader making it a great "All Chicago" line up.

If you know me then you know it's no secret that I have a serious passion for Rocksteady Reggae. Actually not just Rocksteady, but Reggae music specifically from the 60's and 70's. I came across this track for the first time about 6 months ago and wondered why I had not discovered it before. It is one of those love songs that it written from true emotion and passion... not just to sell a memorable hook or an image. I feel like songs of that caliber are a dying breed, or are just so far drowned out by the mainstream that I have not found them. Point being that if you truly love music then you can recognize passion and emotion and this song has both.

As those of you close to me know, I've really been into Moombahton lately. At first, I wasn't much of a fan. It reminded me too much of what I could imagine the Hispanic version of Jersey Shore would be getting down to. What's the proper term for fist pumping in Spanish? Anyway, after exploring the genre in more depth, I found that Moombahton has a more mature, sexier side, and I LOVE IT!

Up today is a Moombahton remix of Modjo's Lady by Canadian DJ/Producer A-Mac. I about lost it when I found this! You can take the girl out the rave, but not the rave out the girl!! This remix took a classic and breathed new life into it. Honestly, if you played both the original and this remix back to back, I would work my hips twice as hard to the remix! And, that's saying a lot because home girl right here can dance, okaay?!

Fela for Freedom

Fela Kuti equals rebel music. Something that we should all be making and/or supporting. Music is our lifeline. How many of us express our feelings through our Facebook YouTube music video posts or through the posting of lyrics from our favorite song?

Fela wrote this song and delivered it in 1975. The water no get enemy message means... Water, our key to life, will never have an enemy. Even, "If water kill your child, na water you go use." Water kills your child, you're still going to use it. You cannot make an enemy of water because you need it to live. It's a political statement. How can the government take us down, kill us with all the disease and poverty they've introduced and still survive? Without us, there is nothing to have power over... something they are too vain to recognize.

Rebel music is not necessarily something of war, but of openness. Opening ones mind to different thought. That in itself is rebellious. The movement is all around us. We need to nurture it, if we are to stand a chance in the world to come.

I was first introduced to the jazzy goodness that is Matthew Herbert in 1998. I have a vivid memory of my friend, Joel, opening the 12" Going Round single, tossing it on the tables, and hopping around with 12+ friends at the rave cave du jour. From that point on, Herbert remained on my crew's soundtrack for years and years to come.

Recently, I was put in charge of programming the ipod for work and tossed a couple Herbert tracks on it, thereby reigniting my thirst for this particular artiste. If you are not familiar, I urge you to, well, GET FAMILIAR! You will not regret it! He is a TRUE musician! Also, let me not forget to mention Dani Siciliano. She is probably my favorite lady to lend her voice to house recordings. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love the classic divas like, Dajae, and Byron Stingly. And, I have a very special place in my heart for La India, and Lady Miss Kier, but Dani... Dani has that je ne sais quoi! Mmmm...

I'm posting Something Isn't Right off of the album Scale. It's been looping in my head like a mo' all week! The first half of the song just gets my heart a flutterin'. One of the coolest, grooviest songs of empowerment my ears have ever had the pleasure to listen to.

I'm also including this link to a Herbert tribute mix I found. I'm not particularly fond of how the mix starts or the sometimes lack of fluidity, but it has most of the staples on it so, it's worth a listen or four :) Also, you gotta give it up to the dudes for putting together this mix with the original vinyl!

Played a set at the Congress a while back and was able to catch dudes set. I was thuroughly impressed with his tunes, only beef I had was that he was not using a dj. He would just turn his back to the crowd, get on his mac book and look for the next beat and start it himself. Anyway, he had a great performance and I see big things from him.

Bob Marley x Bill Laswell

Mr. Laswell got the master tapes for some of Bob Marley's more popular tunes and made some amazing ambient remixes which were released in 1997 on Axiom Records which was a branch off of Island Records. He has done similar projects for many different artists including Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis. Outside of his remix work he was known for playing bass and has worked with some of the best in the Funk, Soul, and Jazz communities.

Sam Cooke is by far one of my favorite artists from the era of the 50's and 60's and in the opinion of many, was the one of the pioneers and founders of soul music and has been referred to as, "The King of Soul."

In honor of everyone's favorite Hallmark Holiday, I am posting one of his more well-known diddys, "Cupid." This track is number 452 on Rolling Stones list, the top 500 songs of all time.

Jimmy Soul laid out the secret to happiness back in 1963 and it is a lesson that holds true today as it did back then. During his career he had 2 big hits and that was it. Although he made a second album, it did not receive much attention which gave him the brand of a "One Hit Wonder." He left the music game and ended up joining the army.

I picked up his "Best of" cd and have enjoyed the rest of the tracks on there. It's a shame that he didn't get that shine to keep on in the music business.

This track is a cover of an older Calypso tune by Roaring Lion called "Ugly Woman."

Some people write music in order to sustain themselves financially. Others write music as an honest expression from their soul. No way is better than the other, it just boils down to preference. What I find great about the second way is that when you come from the soul, others are able to connect with that piece on a much deeper level which resounds more than any jingle ever could.

Vic was writing songs when he was only 5 years old. At age 19 he was severely injured in a car accident and was partially paralyzed. He was inspired by poets and wrote about things he thought were beautiful that others may not agree with or see in the same fashion. On December 25th, 2009 he took his own life with which he had tried a few times before without success. He had even wrote a song called "Flirted with You all my Life" which touched on this.

I am posting one of my favorite songs off of "Live at the Cut".

Chances are that no matter who you are, you can find at least one song from the Rolling Stones that you absolutely love, if not many. This particular song is definitely up there with my favorite Stone's tracks of all-time. The track was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and first appeared on their album "Aftermath" from 1966. It was not released as a single, but is regarded as one of their more popular tunes from that era.

Because I love you all so much I have decided to also upload, "Under my Dub" which is a dub house remix of the song and was done very proper. This was ripped from viny from my personal collection so consider yourself lucky :)

This tune is a staple for any house dj and was always one of those tracks that stuck out with me during the party days in the 90's. Maybe it was the lady in the middle of the track climaxing as the track tempo was breaking down to a complete stop. That is not typical with a lot of dance music so it definitely makes an impression.

The track did well on the charts in both the U.S. and Europe when it was released in 1989. People have sampled it over the years and I believe that Ed Rush had done a Drum n' Bass remix of it some years ago.

The Whitest Boy Alive - 1517

Their 2009 album, "Rules" has quickly become one of my favorite albums of all time. This group from Berlin is compromised of some damn fine musicians which include Erlend Øye on guitar and vocals, Marcin Oz on Bass, Sebastian Maschat on Drums, and Daniel Nentwig on Rhodes piano and Crumar synthesizer. I love the simplicity of the entire album which in no way takes from the impact that it makes. Not to mention that the majority of the tunes have a minimal disco feel to them.

This is one of my favorite tracks off of the album and also the track that I first found when I learned about the group. I think you will enjoy it just as much as I have.

I drew inspiration from this track from an old jungle tune that used the Case vocal from the track "Touch Me Tease Me" that he performed with Foxy Brown. The bassline was taken from the Don Julian track Janitzio which has been used in some 90's hip hop tunes. Last I have sprinkles of an old War tune throughout to give it a little more flavor and that leaves us with a chill house cut.

Tomorrow night is the anniversary party for my lovely wife Edie and I. Last year we were married at Le Passage on Saturday, March 21st and now we are having our one year celebration party at Glitter. Joining me on the decks is Tim Zawada, Scotty Brandon, and the Whitelabel Djs (Sadie & Madrid)

The event will be held at Le Passage and starts at 10pm with a complementary champagne reception until 11pm. The event will go until 4am.

"Time of the Season" is one of my favorite tracks from the era of the late 60s / early 70s. The song was written by the keyboard player, Rod Argent and was recorded at Abbey Road studios in 1967. The track blew up in 1969 which was kinda sad as at that point the band had already been split up for about 12 months. It did reach a number 3 position on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

The track that really got me into this group was "Wolf Like Me" which was off of their 3rd album, "Return to Cookie Mountain." After which my wife really got into all of their albums and found the song "Ambulance." It is one of those songs that make you happy that people can still write songs about love without coming off as cheesy or without sacrificing integrity by trying to appeal to a lowest common denominator with a catchy hook.

After Laughter Comes Tears

Wendy was a part of the amazing label, Stax Records. Her stage name of "Wendy Rene" was actually given to her by the one and only Otis Redding. After a little while in her career she married a fellow Stax employee and had a child. She was going to fly out and perform with Otis Redding and the Bar-Kays for what was going to be her final last performance. She declined at the last minute for she wanted to say home with her newborn child. The plane ended up crashing in Madison, WI where Redding and six others died.

This track that I've posted below has been used in the Wu Tang classic, "Tears" as well as Alicia Keys cover of the tune. Every time that I play this out I have at least 2 people come up and ask me about it. By far one of the most amazing tracks of that era.

This is a disco-funk gem also off of the Salsoul label. Instant Funk is a group from Jersey that was the back-up for many famous artists such as: Curtis Mayfield, The O'Jays, Evelyn Champagne King, MFSB, and Lou Rawls. This particular track made number one on both the disco and r&b charts in 1979.

Even though it had already been out for 3 years by then, it was still a favorite at just about every party that I went to. The day that I found the Cajual release at Gramaphone was one of my happiest memories as a dj. All of the track's elements come together to make a perfect banger. If you have not heard this track on a proper soundsystem, then you have yet to really hear it. Johnny still puts out tracks today and has been one of the hardest working producers to come out of our great city.

Disco Wednesday - Ma quale idea

You don't have to speak Italian to understand that this is one slick disco tune. Released in 1980 this was his most well known track and was sampled into the late 90's house anthem, "Don't Call Me Baby" by Madison Avenue.

I heard this dude's tracks over a year ago and was blown away. He took the Chicago juke sound and pushed it to the next level. We tried to bring him out for a show at evilOlive, but he was held in customs in Philly and they ended up sending him back to France on some straight racist bullshit. It is a long story, but we will have him back out again sometime soon.

Love TKO

Last week the world lost one of the greatest R&B / Soul artists (Songwriter & Singer) that we have ever known. He started his music journey with with Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes in the 70's and then went on to pursue a very successful solo career. I have uploaded one of my all time favorite slow jams and one of his most known pieces of work, "Love TKO". My first expierences with that song came in the form of sampling when Ahmad used the beginning of the track for his tune, "Back in the Day". I also have an old Ragga Jungle tune that used the same exact sample.

Outside of music he formed "The Teddy Pendergrass Alliance" which was a foundation set up to help those with spinal cord injuries. This came about after 1982 when he himself was paralyzed from the waist down after a bad car accident.

With all of his contributions to the world, he will really be missed.

Jungle pt. 2 - Let Me Know

I can't believe that I am giving this track away as I had spent a lot of time and money trying to acquire the vinyl and only came up with a used white label that had seen its fair share of needle time. Not like that really mattered as I was just so happy to finally have a copy of the tune as this was the "pre-serato" era.

The track came out in 1997 on Jedi Records and featured an amazing Aaliyah sample from her track of the same name. Towards the middle we have that classic Souls of Mischief sample from "93 Til Infinity" which came from "Heather" by Billy Cobham. I have to touch on the synth bass which really tied it all together and was the driving force of the entire track. If you have the means, listen to this on something with some good low end.

Standing on the shore (Cassian Remix)

I found this remix a couple of months ago and fell in love with it. Cassian has been getting a lot of attention for his remixes this past year and as well he should... his work is on point. For me it started with his "Make You Mine" remix from Miami Horror. This remix of Empire of the Sun's "Standing on the Shore" adds a touch of electronic funk to an already good tune.

This is a track that I found in'05 at Gramophone Records and after hearing a lot of good talk about the producer I decided to check it out. Speaking on terms of Ragga Jungle, it is one of the best ever made outside of the Golden Era. Breakage is a producer you want to check out. He has a style that sets himself apart from typical modern jungle / dnb producers.

Nobody Waits

I need to thank the one like Pr3-Frosh for this one. It is by far one of the most beautiful downtempo tracks that my ears have ever had the pleasure of hearing. Off of the double cd entitled "Marathon (2006)", "Nobody Waits" is a shining example of quality downtempo music due to both its musicality and processing. I feel like we will see a resurgence of downtempo / trip hop nights starting back up as backlash to the hard / grinding electro sounds of the previous decade.

This track will definitely play on the heart strings... you will feel it in your chest.

Five Man Army

This could possibly be my most favorite Massive Attack track. The vocals are done by: Massive Attack, Horace Andy, Tricky, and Claude Williams and they all just kill it. The dub reggae feel is what really made the track for me... I'm a sucker for some well produced dub.
